
This course teaches the fundamentals of painting as a study of the creative surface. Explore the paint medium by learning basic painterly techniques such as colour theory and how to mix and apply paint for scrafitto, impasto and glazing. As an extension of the drawing process, important elements of composition - design, contrast and proportion - will become part of your artist's vocabulary. Students will paint from a selection of subjects and design ideas under close guidance in a studio setting.

In this course student's will explore their innate creativity and discover the amazing potential of acrylic paint. We will explore colour , paint application- imprints. palette knife , texture and surface, skins, collage and mixed media. This class is suitable for beginners or those wishing to stimulate their creative processes.
Offered Spring 2013 July 4 - July 25 (Thursdays, 9:30am)After learning fundamental techniques of mixing, and applying paint, basic colour theory, and the structural elements of composition, design and proportion, you will be encouraged to experiment and discover your potential. Subjects and themes include still-life, urban landscape, painting from objects and images, abstraction and the imagination (concept art).
Offered Winter 2014 (Mondays and Fridays, 9:30am - 1:30pm, 6 weeks)Paint in washes of pure colour, preferring to layer, rather than mix, after an initial careful drawing has been executed. Learn how the details are built up gradually. There is so much more to discover and nature has it all: from the seemingly simple to the convolutions of an iris petal.

With a contemporary approach of experimentation and exploration of concepts, techniques and theory, you will develop an understanding of colour, form and composition.

This intermediate level course will build on skills related to drawing, composition and colour theory learned in fundamental painting courses. You will be expected to demonstrate the embodiment of colour theory and extend your drawing ability towards realism as well as abstraction.
Offered Fall 2013 September 9 - October 21 (Mondays and Fridays, 9:30am - 1:30pm, 6 weeks)Begin the search for form and content in the endeavour to develop a personal expression in painting. You will be introduced to painting concepts within the framework of the 20th Century historical evolutionary process. Apply these stunning concepts first hand onto canvas .Concepts and techniques will begin with Post-Impressionism and explore European Modernism through the works of its masters. These techniques will be synthesized to apply to your own body of work.
Offered Winter 2014Develop your innate creativity with various painting projects. Using colour theories, compositional strategies and the exploration of historical and contemporary painting styles, you will focus on themes that include abstraction, urban landscapes and free-form painting. This course follows the Introduction to Acrylics 112B or equivalent
Offered TBAThis course involves the introduction of concepts, the generation of ideas, and the discovering of personal styles and palettes all leading to a group exhibition. Complete at least 6 paintings under mentoring. In depth discussion of approaches, content and other supportive feedback are part of this course.
Offered TBA (, Start Time TBA - End Time TBA, 12 weeks)Work towards understanding your audience! Approach painting through the eyes of the viewer. Explore painting in a sequential manner, from the conceptual formulation of ideas, the choosing of colour combinations that best support the intended mood and statement, the development of composition through the manipulation of viewpoints, object orientation, shape and placement. You will develop the editorial skills required to critique ideas in the earliest stages of development, before painting begins.
Offered Fall 2013 October 8 - October 31 (Tues - Wed - Thurs, 9:30am - 1:30pm, 4 weeks)>This six week course will be open to students of all levels of experience in painting as well as those who are already advanced on their own path and require mentoring. Lectures and studio work will be informed by the influences of some of the most important painters in the latter half of the twentieth century such as Hans Hofmann, Frank Auerbach, R.B. Kitaj, John Bratby and Francis Bacon.
Offered Spring 2013 July 12 - August 23 (Fridays, 10:00am - 5:00pm, 6 weeks)Develop your own genre and subject matter! Structured on the individual needs and specific requirements of each painter, this course will facilitate individual learning goals via exploration of both composition and handling of paint.
