As a beginning student, you will learn to braid these two elements creatively together.

PATTERN DESIGN for ARTISTS 349
Instructor: Lesley Turner
Working with the principle of learning by doing, you will deconstruct and reconstruct a wide range of historical and culturally-based patterns to come to a sound understanding of pattern design principles. Each lesson you will experiment with a different type of design, such as fractals, cellular automata, notan, and tessellations, resulting in the creation of your own invaluable Pattern Dictionary. With an increased level of visual literacy, you will be enabled to design personally meaningful and unique patterns to incorporate in your own work, whatever the medium. The wide variety of exercises will be worked predominantly on paper because it is quick and relatively inexpensive. Pleasing pattern designs can then be translated to your medium of choice – textiles, clay and other sculpted media, printmaking, and digital media. The course provides a sound hands-on learning foundation for further pattern design using computer programs such as Photoshop and Illustrator.
